WP Inspector collects nothing

Effective 26 July 2026

WP Inspector does not collect, store, transmit, or sell any user data. There is no account, no server, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind. Everything the extension does happens inside your browser and stays there.

Who we are

WP Inspector is a free Chrome extension published by AmericanPlugins. Questions about this policy go to privacy@americanplugins.com.

What the extension does

WP Inspector has one purpose: to tell you which WordPress theme, plugins, page builder and version a website is running. It does this only when you click its toolbar icon, and only for the tab you are looking at.

What it reads, and what happens to it

When you click the icon, the extension reads the following from the page you are on:

  • The page's HTML, to find asset paths under /wp-content/ that reveal theme and plugin folder names
  • The generator meta tag, if present, for the WordPress version
  • The site's own publicly readable style.css and readme.txt files, to turn folder names into real product names and version numbers

All of this is processed in your browser and rendered in the popup. When you close the popup, it is gone. None of it is written to disk, sent anywhere, or retained.

Permissions, and why each one exists

PermissionWhy
activeTabGives temporary access to the tab you are on, and only after you click the icon. Access ends when you leave the tab. The extension cannot read any page in the background, and cannot see your other tabs.
scriptingLets the extension run its detection script once, in that tab, on that click.

The extension requests no host permissions, no storage, no tabs, and no access to browsing history.

Third parties

There are none. No analytics provider, no error reporting service, no advertising network, no content delivery network. The extension makes no requests to any server operated by AmericanPlugins, because no such server exists for this product.

Data retention and deletion

There is nothing to retain and nothing to delete. Uninstalling the extension removes it completely.

Children

WP Inspector is a developer tool and is not directed at children. It collects no data from anyone, of any age.

Limited use

WP Inspector's use of information received from users adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Since the extension collects no user data, no data is used, transferred, or sold for any purpose.

Changes

If a future version of WP Inspector ever collects data, this page will be updated before that version ships, and the change will be described in the extension's listing. The effective date at the top of this page will change accordingly.
